How to Evenly Heat Your Home

January 07, 2015

Keeping your home a consistent temperature can prove to be a challenge as winter hangs around. There are a range of factors that play in to evenly heating your home as well as things to consider doing, or not doing, to ensure you’re keeping every corner of your home comfortable during the cold months, and month after month.

One of the most common things that people do when they realize a room is too warm during the winter is close the vents. Most modern homes use forced air systems, and closing off vents to adjust room temperature can cause the system to become overloaded and can negatively impact the performance of the system. Due to the way these systems run, shutting vents effects the way the system “breathes,” reducing your energy efficiency.

So what can you do to help make your home heat more evenly?

Ensure the area around your cold air return vents is clear

Your heating and cooling system doesn’t only push hot and cold air throughout your home, it also pulls out cold air to help reach a specific temperature. You want to keep these vents clear from obstructions so that your system can get rid of the cold air while providing you with heat.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance

It’s preached nonstop, and really can’t be said enough, but having routine maintenance done on your system can get rid of a lot of headaches. Whether it’s a dirty filter that needs changing, or a larger issue with a circuit board, our team will work with you to make your home as comfortable as it can be.

A Quick Switch

Depending on the arrangement of your home, some parts may have an easier time receiving and sustaining heat. One simple way you can get around this problem is by going to your thermostat and switching the fan setting from Auto to On. Making the switch allows your home’s air to continuously mix the air from all of the areas in your home, giving you a more even temperature.

Of course these aren’t the only ways to ensure you’re getting the most out of your heating and cooling system, but if we wrote a blog on the endless number of ways you could heat your home more evenly, you’d be reading for a while.
