Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Houston just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hindering its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area routinely to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have piled up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Houston will more than likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Marcos AC & Heating in Houston, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
